The Beautiful Philippines
This week I chose a country that I have heard of as a tourist attraction, the Philippines. The Philippines is a Southeast Asian country. known for their beautiful beaches, monuments, mountains, rainforests and diving spots. What many do not know that the Philippines is one of the richest countries in Southeast Asia, but they struggle with child mortality, maternal health and infectious diseases. due to lack of preventative strategies, treatment, education, immunizations and sexual and reproductive healthcare. (UNDP) The total infant mortality rate is 20.9 deaths per 1000 births, followed by a maternal mortality rate of 121 deaths per 100,000 births. Due to their lack of physicians and health beds, being at 1.28 physicians per 1,000 population and 1 bed per 1,000 population, they fail to administer treatments and healthcare to ensure healthy lives and well being.
In addition, 77,000 people of a population of 105,893,381currently live with HIV/AIDs along wit 1,200 deaths in the year 2018. Their risk of contracting disease is high, especially due to climate change they are at risk of food/ waterborne diseases such as, bacterial diarrhea, leptospirosis, typhoid fever and hepatitis A. Recently in October, the CDC issued a travel notice regarding a polio outbreak.
The sustainable development goals will be implemented by "institutionalizing the Alternative Learning System" to reach out to youth who are not in school and vulnerable groups to offer education services. Also, the Philippines' Green Jobs Act was applied to offer jobs and influence a better economy. Furthermore, they implemented project NOAH to express the Climate Risk Management Framework and plan to form an action plan. This will provide "timely weather information for disaster preparedness." (SDG Knowledge Platform) They are monitored with voluntary National Reviews, in which they report their progress, challenges and plans. Meeting their goal is important and most definitely a priority, for they stand strong in getting everyone behind leaving no one behind.
According to The World Facebook, the Philippines is an island along the Ring of Fire and also a country that is the most exposed to tropical storms. They typically get hit by a typhoon 5 out of the average 9 times in a year. This in turn shows how climate change relates to sustainable development. The country is constantly enduring destruction and reconstruction, thereby slowing their growth and improvement of health, because this effects their water sanitation. In order for the Philippines to reach their goal of reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and fighting off infectious disease, their resources lie in immunization campaigns and their formulation in a sustainable consumption and production action plan.

when people speak about the Philippines they don't usually bring up the fact its one of the richest east Asian countries. actually I just found that out from your blog today but when I hear about the Philippines I usually hear about sex trafficking and sex tourism . its different to talk about health issues and seeing the impact that has on the community.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteIt was great reading your post about the Philippines because I talked about that country in my other blog. The Philippines is indeed a beautiful place to visit and has lots of spot to visit. It sad that they struggle with child morality, maternal health, and infectious diseases. Most reason why third world countries suffer from diseases is because they do not have the proper knowledge of prevention like the Philippines. What I never knew was that there only 1.28 physician per 1,000 population and 1 bed per 1,000 population. That’s crazy the little amount of health care service they have to treat its population. This can be a huge concern because most people will not get the help they need because no treatment or healthcare will be available. Overall, it a good thing that Green Job Act was implanted to help Philippines with jobs and influence a better economy. I loved really your post and learned a lot, Great job!
Hi Ma'k'la,
ReplyDeleteThe Philippines is such a beautiful country that it's easy to forget that they are dealing with struggles of their own under all that beauty. The issues that this country deals with are not unique to them, but they do need to be educated on overall health through topics such as immunizations and prevention strategies for infectious diseases. In the situation that the Philippines is in, I think that education is the key to improving maternal health and reducing child mortality. I appreciate that the government is reaching out to vulnerable groups to provide education services because I think that that is where change is really going to begin. Great post!
Hello Ma'k'la,
ReplyDeleteThe Philippines elected a new president in May of 2016. This country needed a change to a more people-focused political plan. This new government needed to work towards improving the overall well-being with the Department of Health, writing the Philippine Health Agenda 2016-2022. This country has the youngest population in East Asia, and it is the world’s largest outsourcing center. I read what you stated about the infant mortality rate, and I could not believe it. I knew the Philippines as a magnificent tourist place and an outsourcing place. It never crossed my mind all the health problems and the lack of prevention this country face. From what I read, the new government is trying to improve all areas and is working with the World Health Organization (WHO). I cannot believe this country lacks physicians, as this is a key issue to be sure to deliver the best care to the population. The life expectancy is now 68 years, but still the plan for this new government is that more people will be covered with health insurance. Also, maternal and children's health services will be improved. The numbers you mentioned for infant mortality and maternal mortality show that preventive medicine, diagnostics, and treatment services are needed. It is necessary to provide effective interventions to preventable diseases like Tuberculosis. Also, the population needs more health education because they lack the literacy to make decisions about their health. I would like to visit this country. The picture you display on your blog is amazing! Great post!
