The Marley Country
This week I will be covering Jamaica. Jamaica is a Caribbean country that is known as the Bob Marley country. They are also known for their inclusive vacation bundles, their beaches and the signature reggae music. Jamaica has had history of natural disasters and very diverse climate change.
Jamaica has committed to addressing these issues through implementation of policies and their sustainable developmental goals.
Their issues are brought on by "natural disasters, negative effects of climate change, and high levels of indebtedness." These are big issues for the country because it disrupts the progress of growth amongst the country. It effects them economically with being a tourists attraction, supplies/resources and employment. They plan on accelerating the progress towards the goal by implementing national priorities, identifying mechanisms and strategies for financing, etc.
Jamaica has many resources to assist with meeting their goal, such as clean water, a strong commitment and partnership among other island nations, such as The Bahamas, and a growing economy. These resources can and will ensure the health lives of their people and their well-being by making sure there is proper sanitation, people remain healthy and receive adequate health care. This also assures employment and a quick recovery due to natural disasters, climate change, etc.
These issues are currently being addressed as stated previously, Jamaica has made a commitment and has demonstrated how this is a priority. They have developed their vision, their ERP, which is a economic reform programme to "provide greater focus to economic growth." This will assist with their high levels of indebtedness. They will also work on climate-proofing which will help them manage the environment and build Jamaica's "resilience" to any future disasters headed their way.
The United States struggles with diverse climate change and natural/ man made disasters often but I hardly hear anything being done to change that. Pollution, contaminated water, man made earthquakes due to drilling; all this and more can be prevented if proper measures are taken. Even indebtedness, so many people in the U.S. are dealing with student loans alone. What about credit card debt? Mortgages? Car notes and loans? Opposed to Jamaica experiencing these same issues, butcher solution is creating a program, implementing different policies and initiative.

Ma'k'la,
ReplyDeleteYour posts are always very interesting and creative. I enjoyed reading about Jamaica because I used to dream of living there one day. but as far as the information provided, I am actually really shocked in their issues because I have always assumed they were a well-off country. They portray a beauty on the outside as it is a tourist attraction but it is important to address their current issues as a country. I think that it can be hard for countries that are tourist attractions to remain 100% healthy and safe because any place where there is a high population of people, it can make people more susceptible to diseases and lack of sanitation. I think it is great they they are taking action and recognizing their issues and making use of the resources they currently have for the better of their people.
Hi Ma'k'la,
ReplyDeleteI always hear about Jamaica on how beautiful this country is and I do not doubt the beauty that Jamaica can bring. Reading your post I realized how well Jamaica is taking care of their people and country. Jamaica has taken initiative to prepare for the future which is something every country should be doing for their people. According to UNDP Jamaica (2019), Jamaica has proven a climate change solution through Rainwater Harvesting- a method that is being observed in 70 training institutions across the nation (2019). The main centerpiece of the Rainwater Harvesting system is the water tank. This water tank represents a cost-effective way of storing scarce rainwater, especially needed for droughts (2019). This solution definitely supports the resilience that Jamaica is showing and the efforts are making a tremendous difference when it comes to providing food and water for Jamaicans. Jamaicans are working together and this shows that they are taking SDG#3 seriously.

Hello Ma'k'la,
ReplyDeleteJamaica is a beautiful country. I was actually just there this past summer. It is culture rich. But I did get to see some of the natural disaster damage done. And that would be the heaviest hit to their tourism. Jamaica is a heavy tourist attraction, so I don't think it will every really end up being 100% healthy. With all the attractions in Jamaica I think they will always have tourism. When someone goes they can clearly see how small the island is and how high the population is. But overall I didn't know Jamaica had that much to offer besides their culture and beauty. This was a very informative blog, thanks for sharing.
I am entirely stunned in their issues since I have constantly accepted they were a wealthy nation. They depict a wonder outwardly as it is a vacation destination yet it is essential to address their present issues as a nation. I feel that it very well may be hard for nations that are vacation destinations to stay 100% sound and safe in light of the fact that wherever where there is a high populace of individuals, it can make individuals progressively helpless to ailments and absence of sanitation. With every one of the attractions in Jamaica I figure they will consistently have the travel industry. At the point when somebody goes they can unmistakably perceive how little the island is and how high the populace is. In any case, generally speaking I didn't realize Jamaica had that a lot to offer other than their way of life and excellence. This was an exceptionally useful blog, a debt of gratitude is in order for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHi Ma'k'la, I really enjoyed reading your post as Jamaica is one of the most beautiful places on Earth; however, it goes through some rough times. Obviously, which you mentioned, it experiences many hurricanes, which an increase in these Caribbean hurricanes can be associated with climate change, which creates a cycle throughout the country of what it effects. Their economy relies heavily on tourism, as the rest of their country is pretty rough-the country is well known for being filled with drugs, murder, and other crimes. And when a hurricane reaches Jamaica's beaches, the amount of tourists decreases drastically, leaving their economy in the hands of the locals, which can hurt their economy until the beaches are able to recover from the natural disasters.
ReplyDeletehey ma'k'la
ReplyDeletemost island nations deal with having an economy that is based entirely on tourism which can have negative impacts when natural disasters hit because no tourist no money. So its nice to see how they are taking precautionary steps to ensure their economic safety. on the other hand in a country like the US when have a vast economy and don't depend mostly on one thing so we don't think its necessary to have the same measures.
